The Independent Wins Second Award of Excellence from CTBUH
March 8, 2022
Rhode Partners is thrilled to announce that The Independent has received an Award of Excellence in the Best Tall Building – Residential category from the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). The tower is the only project located in Texas to receive the award in the 2022 awards program as well as the only project in the southern United States represented.
Currently standing as the tallest residential building west of the Mississippi River, the tower comprises 363 apartments ranging from one to four bedrooms along with 20,000 square feet of amenity space. Residential tiers push and pull on a small building footprint, climbing the skyline in staggered blocks and giving the building’s program a unit mix that offers unique views and spatial qualities to residents.
Just last year, The Independent won an Award of Excellence from CTBUH for Interior Design celebrating the tower’s elegant, museum-influenced interiors that feature built-in furnishings, luxury furniture and over 80 commissioned pieces from 23 artists.
Of winning this award, firm founder Brett Rhode says “This building reflects Austin’s amazing creative spirit. It is a locally designed building with a much larger story to tell. We are honored to receive this award on behalf of our entire team and hope The Independent inspires thinking about sustainability and local character for large scale projects.”
The Independent has received over a dozen prestigious awards including an AIA Austin Design Award of Merit, DNA Paris Design Awards’ 2021 Architecture - Big Scale Building Award, The Chicago Athenaeum’s 2021 International Architecture Award, and The Chicago Athenaeum’s 2021 American Architecture Award. For the third year in a row, the project will be included in CTBUH's annual skyscraper publication, Tall Buildings + Urban Habitat, published by CTBUH and distributed internationally.
CTBUH’s 2022 awards ceremony will take place at the Tall Excellence: Seeking the Ideal in Vertical Urbanism conference in November this year. The Rhode Partners office plans to attend the conference, awards ceremony, and take the opportunity to take a staff retreat to Chicago.
